Our Journey

Founded in 2005 by Reagan Oduor Nyachieng'a, M-Tafsiri Africa has grown from a cultural group to a registered non-profit organization in Kenya (2018) and a sister association in Malmö, Sweden (2023). This growth reflects our commitment to using the arts to foster cross-cultural connections between Denmark, Sweden, and Kenya. Reagan's vision, as a performing artist, music teacher, and community development expert, has been instrumental in creating a platform that transcends geographical boundaries, weaving together diverse narratives and enriching communities.M-Tafsiri Africa recognizes the power of cultural diversity and the need for unity. We address the challenge of limited avenues for cultural unity by harnessing the universal appeal of music, art, and cultural expression to promote respect, collaboration, and understanding. Our work demonstrates the transformative power of music and community engagement on a global scale. We create job opportunities for artists through local and international concerts, fostering economic growth in the cultural and creative sector. Our expansion to Malmö, Sweden, facilitates the sharing of African music with a broader audience and creates opportunities for Nordic folk music exchange, learning, and socio-economic development.

We have implemented several impactful projects, including

  • "Youth and Culture—Hand in Hand for the Future,"

  • "Changing the Narratives of Street Children and Youth,"

  • "Mbali na Nyumbani, Najihisi Nyumbani,"

  • "KulturCrew-Kenya."

We have a particular emphasis on supporting young people, as well as underprivileged and marginalized individuals.

Job Creation

Peer to peer Learning exchange

The initiative to host music concerts and events serves as a powerful catalyst for change in Kenya and Sweden, Importantly, these concerts also provide musicians with opportunities to earn income, thereby supporting local talent and contributing to the economy promoting peace building and addressing crucial youth issues while fostering community service. By leveraging the transformative power of arts and culture, these events create a unique platform for dialogue and conflict resolution, enabling diverse voices to be heard and appreciated. Moreover, they underscore the importance of cultural diversity, showcasing how different artistic expressions can unite communities rather than divide them. Overall, this multifaceted approach not only enriches the cultural landscape but also plays a vital role in building a more harmonious society.

The program uses a peer-to-peer music exchange method to develop musicians' professional and personal skills and broaden their musical horizons. We create a unique platform where young musicians from Kenya and Nordic countries come together to exchange culture and music traditions and develop their careers. Kenya's rich music traditions are largely unknown in the North and vice versa. The exchange builds a musical bridge between these countries, leading to new innovative musical expressions and global collaborations between young artists. By focusing on young musicians, an investment is made in the cultural bearers and potential leaders of the future, which gives the initiative a long-term potential for positive change, mutual capacity building, and networking.

M-Tafsiri Africa fosters capacity building and provides tailored training in areas that include project planning and management, financial planning and management, accounting principles and practices, budgeting, financial reporting, tax compliance, audit coordination, and streamlining financial operations. In addition to technical competence, we mentor and train junior accountants and staff in financial best practices, helping to further the professional growth of their teams.

We offer training in traditional Kenyan music and instrumentation building to preserve and pass on our cultural heritage to future generations. This approach not only fosters a deep appreciation for the art form but also ensures that the rich traditions of Kenyan music are kept alive and relevant in a modern context. By engaging participants in both tangible skills and intangible cultural values, we create a holistic educational experience. The rich tapestry of Kenyan music education serves as both a vibrant testament to the nation's cultural heritage and a crucial framework for its future. By training individuals in traditional music, this educational approach not only preserves the intricate rhythms and melodies that define Kenyan identity but also fosters a deep appreciation for this art form among participants and audiences alike. As these teachings weave through modern contexts, they ensure that the age-old traditions remain relevant and resonant, adapting to contemporary expressions while honoring their roots. Ultimately, the integration of tangible skills with intangible cultural values creates a holistic educational experience, empowering learners to connect with their heritage in meaningful ways and inspiring a new generation to carry forth the legacy of Kenyan music into an ever-evolving world.
